Shirley J. Salmon, PhD and Thomas L. Salmon Scholarship

The Shirley J. Salmon, PhD and Thomas L. Salmon Scholarship was established in 2003 by Dr. Shirley Salmon and her brother, Tom Salmon. After working five years as a first grade teacher, Shirley became interested in speech pathology. She earned a master’s degree and, in 1965, a Ph.D. in Speech Pathology, both from the University of Iowa. She joined the faculty of the KU School of Allied Health in 1967. In 1972, she took a position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, but she continued to supervise a clinical practicum for KU Medical Center students until her retirement in 1997. Tom is retired from a civilian career as a logistician for the U.S. Air Force.

This award is for graduate students in the Hearing and Speech Department at KU’s School of Health Professionals who are working toward an M.A. or Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology. A GPA of at least 3.0 is required. Recipients should be primarily interested in addressing adult speech-language communication problems.
