Emergency Grant Application

The Emergency Grant Application is intended to assist currently enrolled KU Lawrence/Edwards campus students who are experiencing an unexpected or unforeseen expense due to circumstances beyond their control. Emergency funds are intended to assist a student in addressing an immediate, unexpected financial hardship which might otherwise prevent them from continued participation as a KU student. Please review examples of an emergency, as well as expenses that are not considered at help.ku.edu/emergency-funds.

Please be aware that applying does not guarantee that you will receive funding. Awarding of funding is not immediate and can take time – if you have questions or concerns about your application, please contact ean@ku.edu. 

Please Note: The Emergency Grant Application awards institutional funding. It is not the same as the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). HEERF was temporary federal funding that was awarded to KU students in Spring 2020, Spring 2021, and Fall 2021. All HEERF funding has been exhausted.

    Please note that funds are limited, and we are not able to meet the needs of every student who applies.  Please be aware that applying does not guarantee that you will receive funding. Awarding of funding is not immediate and can take time – if you have questions or concerns about your application, please contact ean@ku.edu.

    What to expect after submitting this application:

    Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation message indicating we have received your application.  Your application will be reviewed and you will be contacted via your KU email from ean@ku.edu about the status of your emergency grant application within 1 week of submission. You might be contacted by the Emergency Aid Network to discuss your situation further. Submitting an incomplete application, or not providing further information when prompted by the Emergency Grant Application may result in a longer review time. 
  2. For emergency aid, an emergency is defined as an unexpected/unforeseen crisis that impacts student success and is beyond a student’s control. Examples of an emergency include, but are not limited to:

    • Displacement/homelessness

    • Food insecurity, lack of access to food

    • A death or illness that has resulted in financial hardship

    • Victim of a crime or accident, or a natural disaster

    • Unplanned non-discretionary expenses (such as emergency medical bills, or unexpected car repairs, etc.)

    Does your situation meet the above definition of an emergency?
  3. Do you have other financial resources you could pursue? (Examples: additional financial aid options, savings, familial sources of support, etc.)
  4. Can your need be met by an award of $500 or less?
  5. Please describe your situation and what your need is: What unexpected/unforeseen circumstances have led you to request emergency aid? What expense(s) are you requesting assistance for?
  6. How much total emergency grant funding are you requesting?
  7. Please share what your action plan is for resolving or improving your situation.
  8. Required Documentation: Please provide any supporting documentation that verifies your emergency/crisis. You will need to provide copies of any official invoices, bills, or quotes outlining the expenses you are requesting to be covered if you are applying for emergency grant funding.  Unofficial estimates/documents are not accepted, except in rare cases. If you are requesting funding for expenses where official/third party documentation cannot be provided (such as food/meal assistance), please upload a document explaining why documentation cannot be provided.
