Nontraditional Student Scholarships Application

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center (SILC), Nontraditional Student Services administers the award process for Nontraditional Student Endowment and Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) scholarships. For more information about SILC and nontraditional student programming, please visit silc.ku.edu or email silcfront@ku.edu. Nontraditional students at KU meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • A student 3 or more years older than their cohort (i.e. a 21 year old freshman)
  • A student who is married as of 2/2023
  • A student who has one or more dependents (adult or child) as of 2/2023
  • A student who is commuting 10 or more miles to campus
  • U.S. Military Veteran as of 2/2023. Must submit a copy of your DD-214 or NOBE. If your discharge is not Honorable, this does not disqualify you. You will be asked to provide an explanation of the reason(s) for having a different status within the application.

Peedee Brown Award — Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, full or part-time enrollment. Preference is given to an unmarried custodial parent.
Mary C. Breakey Award — Graduate or undergraduate female, Kansas resident, 1-6 credit hour enrollment only.
Soad El-Hodiri Award — Undergraduate only, male or female, full or part-time enrollment.
Paula Gottdenker Award — Graduate or undergraduate female, age 50 or older, unmarried, full or part-time enrollment.
EOF Nontraditional Student Leader/Veteran Need Scholarship — Undergraduate only, enrolling in 6 or more credit hours for upcoming Fall semester. Demonstrate significant contributions to campus and/or community.

Note: With the exception being the Peedee Brown Award, all scholarships require financial need (filling out the FAFSA or the International Student Needs Analysis Worksheet with Financial Aid) as a primary criterion.

  23. Please submit a personal statement IN PDF FORMAT. Statement should be typewritten, double-spaced, 12 point font, and 750 words or less addressing the following topics:

    -Educational commitment and goals, including any future plans to continue your education.
    -Personal and professional short term and long term goals.
    -Financial need, including explanations of any special circumstances (loss of income or assets, additional expenses, etc.) unaccounted for in your financial aid information.
    -Personal history, such as family background, special interests, activities, community service, and previous awards or recognition.
    -Campus and community leadership contributions and involvement regarding any issues or groups.
    -Any military service and why you chose to seek higher education.
  24. Please submit a current resume IN PDF FORMAT.
  25. Please give the names and emails of two (2) individuals that can provide a letter of reference that speaks to your character and dedication to academia. One of these letters must be from an instructor. Please make sure that your reference emails are correct and that the reference knows they MUST submit their letters before the deadline of April 7, 2023. Applications that are missing reference letters will NOT be considered.
