Hixson Opportunity Award

Support scholarships for University of Kansas students. Operation and Selection Criteria of the Christina M Hixson Opportunity Award: i) KU shall develop program guidelines and recruit through all available channels, in Kansas schools and communities, candidates and applications for the Hixson Opportunity Awards; Candidates should be students who, due to life challenges or financial hardships, might not consider a college education as an opportunity available to them for realization of their full potential; ii) KU shall appoint a selection committee to evaluate applicants and choose recipients from throughout the State of Kansas; Ten recipients shall be selected annually, beginning with students admitted for the Fall 2007 semester; During the evaluation of applicants, KU will share copies of application with the Lied Foundation for comment; iii) Recipients shall be Kansas residents and graduates of Kansas high schools. Freshman students shall be eligible for consideration; Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and be of academic merit to meet the admission standards of the University of Kansas; iv) The Christina M. Hixson Opportunity Awards Fund shall provide an annual award of up to $6,000 per student per year. The award amount of $6,000 may be adjusted by a figure not to exceed the funds available for spending as determined in accordance with the Spending Policy. Such an adjustment shall not occur more frequently than every five years, and shall be effective for the next incoming class of freshman students and all subsequent incoming classes. v) Recipients who maintain a record of academic progress are eligible to renew the award for up to three additional years (for a maximum of four years). vi) KU shall provide an academic and personal support system for recipients of the awards.

The selection committee cares greatly about the content of the letter, more than the title or position of your reference.
