CLAS Scholarships/Awards Application

Scholarships and awards for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas. By completing this main application students will be automatically entered for any of the following awards for which they meet the eligibility criteria. Award amounts range from $500 to $7,800.

Betty Wahlstedt Student Memorial Scholarship
For outstanding undergraduates majoring in Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology.

Hilden Gibson Scholarship
For outstanding juniors who are studying in the social sciences, preparing to enter their senior year.

John Ise Award
For outstanding undergraduates majoring in Economics, Political Science, History, or Sociology.

Edward L. Ruhe Scholarship
For outstanding undergraduates majoring or minoring in Anthropology, Visual Art, Art History, English, or Film & Media Studies.

Paul B. Lawson Scholarship
For outstanding juniors preparing to enter their senior year.

Van Eekeren Family Scholarship
For undergraduates with GPA between 2.5 and 3.2 and no withdrawals.

Veta B. Lear Award
For a freshman who has earned a 4.0 in their first semester at KU. This is awarded as a credit to the KU Bookstore.

How can it contribute to the betterment of our immediate and extended communities? Following the above, consider exploring this answer beyond your specific major and immediate career goals. The essay should be 500 words or less

  3. List any involvement with extra-curricular groups in the community.

  5. Request two brief letters of reference from individuals who can directly address your academic performance and potential at the university level, or your extra-curricular activity relevant to the scholarship in question (if any). At least one letter must be from a teacher who has taught you in college or in your senior year of high school, and who can directly address your performance as a student. Letters from family, friends, significant others, or other people who might pose a conflict of interest are discouraged. The most helpful letters will be from college teachers. Students in their first year at KU can submit letters from high school.
